Levels
Levels at AF Islamabad are organised according to the CEFR. Level A1 is the beginner's level and C2 is the most advanced level. Read the information below to understand the degree of proficiency of each level.Level A1 - Beginner
Level A1 is the most elementary level and is subdivided in 3 sublevels: A1.1, A1.2, A1.3. Each sublevel is taught in 30 hours. This means you can complete level A1 in 90 hours.
At the end of level A1, one can… understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. One can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. One can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
Level A2 - Pre-intermediate
Level A2 is also known as “survival level” and is subdivided in 4 sublevels: A2.1, A2.2, A2.3, A2.4. Each level is taught in 30 hours. This means you can complete level A2 in 120 hours.
Level A2 is At the end of level A2, one can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). One can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. One can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
Level B1 - Intermediate
Level B1 is also known as “threshold level” and is subdivided in 6 sublevels: B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, B1.4, B1.5, B1.6. Each sublevel is taught in 30 hours. This means you can complete level B1 in 180 hours.
At the end of level B1, one can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. One can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. One can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. One can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
Level B2 - Upper-intermediate
Level B2 is the independent user level and is subdivided in 5 sublevels: B2.1, B2.2, B2.3, B2.4, B2.5. Each level is taught in 30 hours. This means you can complete level B2 in 150 hours.
At the end of level B2, one can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. One can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. One can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Level C1 - Advanced
Level C1 is not taught in collective classes at Alliance française d’Islamabad. C1 level classes can be arranged on an individual basis in the form of private courses.
At the end of level C1, one can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. One can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. One can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. One can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
Level C2 - Proficiency
Level C2 is not taught in collective classes at Alliance française d’Islamabad. C2 level classes can be arranged on an individual basis in the form of private courses.
At the end of level C2, one can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. One can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. One can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
