Alliance Française Islamabad, in collaboration with Asian Study Group, is pleased to present a screening of In Custody (1994), directed by Ismail Merchant and based on Anita Desai’s novel.
The film follows Deven, a modest Hindi professor, who sets out to record the work of a legendary but declining Urdu poet. What begins as an academic pursuit soon turns into a deeply human journey—revealing artistic decay, cultural neglect, and the burden of preserving a vanishing literary heritage.
With unforgettable performances by Shashi Kapoor, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, and poetry by Faiz Ahmed Faiz, In Custody offers a moving reflection on language, identity, and artistic responsibility.
